americana!

A timeless play inspired by true events.

Written and performed by Maria Vigar, Americana! is a one-woman piece with two characters – a mother and daughter.

Set during the traumas of the Greek Civil War, just as Greece is trying to pick herself up after the ravages of WW2, Americana! shines a light on a Greek peasant family.

The story belongs to the two women, the ‘Americana’ (so named because her husband was living in America), and Katerina, her daughter. Both stand resolute and strong until war and opposing ideals pull them apart.

Vigar paints and portrays the two characters with great authenticity, using considered differences in physicality to make the roles discrete; employing a youthful energy as Katerina which stands in stark contrast against the frail form of the Americana.
